EUPHEMSTIC LANGUAGE IN TIMES MAGAZINE

Based on the task given by Sir Mark, we have to find out 5 euphemistic language that have been used in Times Magazine. 5 euphemistic language that I have found are as follows:

1.   Whatever La Familia Michoacana calls itself, this group of narcotraffickers and murderers you profile is not Cristian.

v  The word ‘narcotraffickers’ is euphemistic language. It means the person who brought drug to other country or in other word is drug dealers.

2.   Governments and large corporations would do well to turn to expertise of the NGO community if they seek development that produces lasting change rather than watching millions or even billions of dollars evaporate.

v  The word evaporate is euphemistic language. It means lost.

3.    To refer them as Christian fundamentalist without a qualifier like ‘self-proclaimed’ is an insult to any Christian.

v  The word ‘self-proclaimed’ is euphemistic language. It means the declaration from others.

4.    There is less painful way to deal with budget shortfalls than cutting jobs and programs: using a graduated scale, just cut the wages of anyone making more than $40,000 per year.

v  The word budget shortfall is euphemistic language. It means that less budget.

5.    In ‘Obama’s Afghan Dilemma.’ Joe Klein writes that “a more punishing counterterrorism effort, rather than patient counter insurgency, maybe the best way to get the Taliban to the table”

v  The word a more punishing counterterrorism effort, rather than patient counter insurgency is euphemistic language. It means that prevention is better than rebellion.
